Othello is a play written by William Shakespeare in 1603 and set in Venice, Italy. This drama is based on a story by Italian writer Geraldo Cynthia. The drama is around the deaths of star-crossed lovers Othello and Desdemona, who are undermined by the evil Iago. Shakespeare’s version of the play centers on Othella, a moor.
The play opens with Iago, a standard bearer in the Venetian army, conversing with Rodrigo, another Venetian. Rodrigo is distraught because his beloved Desdemona, the well-bred daughter of a prominent senator, has recently eloped with a fellow Moorish commander.Iago is also resentful of a guy who recently promoted Cassio to lieutenant instead of him.
The malevolent lago plans to ruin Othello and Desdemona by using Rodrigo as a pawn. To carry out the plot, he pushes Rodrigo to tell Desolimona’s father, Brabantio, about their secret marriage to Othello. Brabantio is enraged to learn of his daughter’s marriage and confronts Othello, accusing the general of seducing her. Brabantio cautions Othello that his daughter could also deceive him.
Meanwhile, Othella is summoned away to defend the island as the enemy Turks launch an invasion on Cyprus. Along with Othello, Emilia, Desdemona, Cassio, and Iago accompany the troops to Cyprus. When they arrive on the island, they discover that the storm has completely wrecked the Turkish navy. Later, they organized a celebration to commemorate his marriage to Desdemona. While Othello was out, Iago got Cassio intoxicated.
Then he persuades Rodrigo to provoke Cassio into a fight. After witnessing the fight, Othello blames Cassio and demotes him. Iago uses the circumstances to persuade Cassio that Desdemona can aid him. Cassio follows Iago’s suggestion and visits Desdemona, who, as expected, agrees to help him. Cassio bumps into Othello just as he returns. Iago seizes this chance to convince Othello that his wife is having an affair with the lieutenant. Othello begins to question his wife’s fidelity.
While Desdemona is in the garden, she drops the handkerchief Othello gave her on their honeymoon. Emilia discovers it, and Iago persuades her to let him deliver the handkerchief to Dedemona personally. Instead, Iago places it in Cassio’s room and tells Othello that Desdemona gave the handkerchief to Cassio as a mark of her affection.Othello initially doubts Iago’s accusation until he sees Cassio offer the handkerchief to Bianca with his own eyes.
Othello is enraged and vows revenge on his wife and Cassio. Nonetheless, Othello feels unwilling to take action against Desdemona. To persuade Othello, Iago stages a conversation with Cassio to establish his point. Meanwhile, Othello overhears the conversation.
Iago coaxes Cassio to discuss his affair with Bianca, which prompts Othello to believe Cassio is talking about Desdemona. After hearing this, Othello decides to kill Desdemona and gives the command to his lieutenant, Iago. He also asks Iago to kill Cassio. Iago again persuades Rodrigo to murder Cassio. Rodrigo reluctantly battles Cassio and sustains an injury. Iago takes advantage of the moment and kills Rodrigo. Othello publicly slaps Desdemona after she mentions Cassio’s name in front of a nobel, Ludovico.Ultimately, Othello confronts Desdemona and smothers her with a pillow. Meanwhile, Emilia reveals the truth. In wrath, Othello stabs Iago, but not fatally. Before being arrested, Othello kills himself. Ludovico names Cassio as Othello’s heir, ordering him to punish Iago for his misdeeds.
