Grammar Translation Method – Definition, Characteristics

The Grammar Translation approach includes translation as well as grammar are both crucial. Grammar-cum Germany is where the translation process first emerged, and was in vogue from 1840 and 1940. This approach is

  • The only factor considered when choosing a vocabulary set is the reading materials that will be utilised, and words are taught through bilingual word lists, dictionaries, and memorization. Typical Grammar Translation texts explain and illustrate grammar rules, provide a list of vocabulary words and their translation equivalents, and provide translation exercises.
  • The fundamental building block of instruction and language use is the sentence. The focus on the sentence is what makes the method unique. A large portion of the lesson is devoted to translating sentences into and out of the target language. The study of foreign language texts was aided in earlier methods of foreign language study by the use of grammar.
  • But this was deemed to be too challenging for secondary school children, therefore an effort was made to simplify language acquisition by putting the focus on the phrase.
  • Precision is emphasized. Students are expected to meet high standards in translation due to the importance placed on rigorous standards of accuracy, which were a requirement for passing the growing number of official written tests that emerged over the century in addition to having intrinsic moral significance.
  • Deductive instruction is used to teach grammar, which means that grammar rules are first presented and studied before being put into effect through translation tasks. The majority of Grammar Translation texts attempted to teach grammar in an orderly and systematic manner by adhering to a syllabus for the placement of grammar points across a text.
