What is STAAR?

The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) programme, which went into effect in the spring of 2012, consists of yearly tests for:

• grades 3 through 8 in mathematics

• RLA in grades 3–8 stands for reading language arts.

• social studies at grade 8 end-of-course (EOC) exams for biology, algebra 1, English I, and English II. science at grades 5 and 8.

The materials on this website give Texas educators and the general public information about the structure and format of the STAAR programme. The details should make it clearer to educators how the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) curriculum standards are measured by the STAAR programme. Instead of limiting or replacing the instruction of the state-mandated TEKS curriculum, these resources ought to supplement it.

STAAR 2023

Beginning in the spring of 2023, new question types will be included in assessments as part of the STAAR redesign. The new question types were created with online testing in mind. For students who qualify to take a unique paper test, the questions have been changed. The sample papers below show how the new questions will appear on a particular paper administration.
