AP Literature Open-ended Prompts- Title Significance

Question : The significance of a title such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is so easy to discover. However, in other works
(for example, Measure for Measure) the full significance of the title becomes apparent to the reader only gradually. Choose two
works and show how the significance of their respective titles is developed through the authors’ use of devices such as contrast,
repetition, allusion, and point of view.

The titles of literary works often serve as a gateway to the story’s themes, motifs, and symbols. However, the full significance of a title may not become clear to the reader until they have delved deeper into the narrative. Two works that exemplify this gradual development of title significance are “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger and “Beloved” by Toni Morrison. In both works, the authors use literary devices such as contrast, repetition, allusion, and point of view to reveal the full significance of their respective titles.
