“In the Flood” by Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai is a poignant story set during the devastating Kerala floods of 1924. The narrative follows Chenaparayan (Chenan) and his family, who are trapped in their thatched hut as floodwaters rise. With no boat to escape, Chenan constructs a makeshift platform to keep his pregnant wife, children, a cat, and their loyal dog above the encroaching water.
As the relentless rain continues, the situation becomes increasingly dire. A boat finally arrives to rescue them, but in the chaos of boarding, the dog is forgotten and left behind on the roof. Despite the abandonment, the dog remains steadfast, enduring hunger, thirst, and fear while clinging to the hut. It howls for help, but its cries go unheard as the floodwaters rise around it.
Throughout the night, the dog faces various dangers, including encounters with a crocodile and a water snake. It continues to protect the hut, displaying unwavering loyalty to its absent master. The following day, thieves arrive to loot the hut. The dog attempts to defend its home but is attacked and severely injured by the intruders.
As the floodwaters begin to recede, Chenan returns in search of his dog. He finds its lifeless body beneath a coconut tree, a casualty of the flood and human cruelty. The hut, once a symbol of their struggle to survive, is now submerged, marking the end of their ordeal.
“In the Flood” highlights the themes of loyalty, resilience, and the harsh realities faced by those on the margins during natural disasters. Through the dog’s tragic story, Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai poignantly depicts the profound bond between humans and animals and the sense of abandonment and loss that accompanies such catastrophic events.
