The summer of 1922 is the setting for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby. A young Minnesotan named Nick Carraway, who relocates to New York to study the bond industry, serves as the story’s narrator. The “new rich” reside in West Egg, a posh Long Island enclave where Nick rents a modest home.
These individuals are recent rich creators who frequently flaunt their wealth. Daisy Buchanan, Nick’s cousin, resides in East Egg, the neighborhood where the “old rich” live. East Egg is home to households with inherited wealth and is more traditional and refined.
After graduating from Yale, Nick has contacts in East Egg. He pays a visit to Daisy Buchanan and her husband, Tom Buchanan, at their opulent East Egg residence.
Nick is uneasy in the presence of Tom, a rich and haughty guy. Jordan Baker, a stunning but cynical professional golfer, is another person Nick meets during this evening. Jordan informs Nick after supper that Tom is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson. A mechanic named George Wilson, who operates a garage in the Valley of Ashes, an industrial wasteland situated between West Egg and New York City, is Myrtle’s husband.
Myrtle has been having an affair with Tom for a while, even though she is married.
Nick comes home one evening to see Jay Gatsby, his enigmatic neighbor, standing outdoors, gazing across the bay at a green light on a pier at the end of Daisy’s estate. Nick is intrigued by Gatsby because of his enigmatic conduct, which suggests that he is waiting for something or someone.
Tom asks Nick to come to New York City a few days later. Tom picks up Myrtle on route, and the two of them head to his downtown residence. They host a party there, where Myrtle gets wasted and makes fun of Daisy, Tom’s wife.
Tom breaks Myrtle’s nose as he strikes her out of rage. This demonstrates Tom’s erratic and violent personality.
Additionally, Nick is invited to one of Gatsby’s lavish parties. These gatherings are renowned for their wildness, extravagant décor, copious amounts of food, and entertainment. Nick is shocked to discover how many individuals, the majority of whom he doesn’t even know, are at the party.
Nick reunites with Jordan Baker during the party, and they spend time together. Nick also meets the charming and shockingly youthful Gatsby. Gatsby addresses Nick casually and amiably, referring to him as “old sport.” Nobody appears to know anything about Gatsby, and his origins and actual identity remain a mystery.
Jordan tells Nick more about Gatsby’s history after the party. James Gatz, Gatsby’s true name, was born in North Dakota into a low-income family. He worked hard to get affluent and changed his name. During World War I, Gatsby was stationed in Louisville and fell in love with Daisy.
But Daisy married a wealthy and influential guy named Tom after Gatsby left for the war. Gatsby purchased his estate in West Egg with the intention of regaining Daisy, whom he had never stopped adoring. Daisy is unaware that he is attempting to get her attention, but his lavish gatherings are intended to do just that.
Nick sets up a meeting between Gatsby and Daisy at his request. After an unpleasant reunion, their previous affections for one another return, and they start an affair. Daisy struggles to balance her love for Gatsby, who stands in for a romanticized past she will never be able to completely regain, with her allegiance to her husband, Tom.
Tom starts to have doubts about Daisy and Gatsby’s relationship as the summer wears on. Tom, Daisy, Nick, and Jordan go to lunch in New York City one day. Tom discovers Daisy’s affection for Gatsby at the meal. He chooses to approach Gatsby because he feels intimidated.
Tom approaches Gatsby at the Plaza Hotel and makes the case that he is unfit to be Daisy’s partner. Daisy is unable to deny her affections for both men, despite Gatsby’s insistence that she never loved Tom.
After that, Tom reveals Gatsby’s criminal history, showing that he amassed his wealth through illicit activities including alcohol bootlegging. Tom wants to remind Daisy of her life with Gatsby and make him appear unworthy of her.
Tom is certain that their romance will stop after the altercation, so he sends Daisy and Gatsby back to East Egg. But then a sad turn of events occurs. Myrtle Wilson gets hit and killed by a vehicle on the way back to East Egg. Tom believes the collision was caused by Gatsby’s vehicle. Furious, he calls Gatsby a coward for escaping the situation.
Gatsby then tells Nick that Daisy was the driver of the vehicle that murdered Myrtle. To keep Daisy safe, Gatsby plans to accept responsibility for the mishap. Despite all that has happened, Gatsby still believes that Daisy will leave Tom and be with him.
Myrtle’s husband, George Wilson, is crushed by her passing. He thinks Myrtle’s lover must have been the driver of the vehicle that murdered her. He finds Gatsby’s estate while he is distraught and furious. When George discovers Gatsby in his pool, he shoots him dead out of rage. George pulls the pistol on himself and ends his own life after murdering Gatsby.
Nick must cope with the fallout from Gatsby’s passing. He plans Gatsby’s funeral, but not many people attend. Despite his lavish lifestyle and his parties, Gatsby ultimately had few real friends. The funeral is attended only by Henry Gatz, Gatsby’s father, and a few other people. This exposes Gatsby’s life’s hollowness and the shallowness of everyone around him.
The things that have happened have left Nick feeling demoralized. Realizing that Jordan’s lack of morality and cynicism are a reflection of the corrupt society he has been living in, he terminates their brief connection.
Soon after Gatsby’s passing, Nick meets Tom and finds out that it was Tom who informed George Wilson that Myrtle’s death was caused by Gatsby’s vehicle. In a terrible turn of events, Tom chooses to keep Daisy’s driving a secret from Nick since he knows Gatsby will be held accountable.
Nick chooses to leave New York and move back to Minnesota after becoming disgusted with the moral decline and egotism of the residents of East Egg. He strolls to the beach close to Gatsby’s estate before departing.
He considers Gatsby’s life and his relentless quest for the American Dream while gazing out into the Long Island Sound. Nick says that despite the past that always seemed to haunt him, Gatsby continued to strive for a brighter future, much like the early immigrants of America.
Nick’s encounters with Gatsby and the crooked world of the rich have left him permanently altered. The chase of dreams, the delusions individuals make to escape their reality, and the terrible results of attempting to recreate the past are all themes in The Great Gatsby.
Gatsby’s death represents the breakdown of the American Dream itself, since his ambition to win Daisy’s affection and live the ideal life is ultimately unachievable.
