The Anglo-saxons were prominent in the early middle ages. The group was divided into three Germanic tribes, the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes. The presence of the Anglo Saxons in the society greatly influenced different fields of life. The influence of Religion was greatly spread in England. Eventually, Christian ideas became popular in Anglo- saxon Literature. Along with these,Anglo-saxons brought Oral poetry. Additionally, they possessed written manuscripts. Those manuscripts possessed valued heroic poetry, greatly emphasising on strong kinship with strong generosity.To be noticed, one of the most important ideas of Christianity, which is the idea of Heaven and Hell was portrayed.Thus, the literary form spread to English Literature, which aided the emergence of ‘ Beowulf’.

In Beowulf, the Anglo-Saxon hero is well defined by the actions of Beowulf. His strength and courage one unbeatable and he is portrayed as humble while comparing with the other greedy and corrupt warriors around him. He displays his greatest qualities in each and every part of the play. Most importantly, Beowulf shows courage and bravery on his way to find GrendeI and battle him. Instead of running back from fear, he stood to fight against the danger. This Can be wistressed in, ” Have watched me rise from the darkness of war. Dripping with my enemy’s blood. I drove five great giants into chains, chased all that raced from the earth, I swam in the blackness of night, hunting monsters out of the ocean and killing them one by one. “This proves the amount of bravery that Beowulf possessed to fight against the monster.

Throughout the novel, Beowulf takes the challenge of fighting the dangerous monster. Without any hindrance or distractions, he stood loyal to the king, whom he promised and defeated the monster. This can be seen in the lines,”When crossed the sea, comrades and him knew that all the purpose was this: to win the goodwill of people or die in Battle.” Thus, proving that Beowulf is loyal and will fulfil her promise to defeat Grendel.

Beowulf has a complex motivation for fighting the monster Grendel. He is always conscious of his duty to kill Grendel. Though he is the strongest warrior, his will to prove his strength becomes second. This can be witnessed in, “My people have said, the wisest, most knowing And best of them, that my duty was to go to the Danes’ Great king. ” The above lines proves how Beowulf sticks on to his duties, as the people believes him.Thus, Beowulf is an Anglo- Saxon hero.
