Introduction:

The theme of an individual opposing the will of the majority is a recurrent one in literature. Whether in essays, plays, or novels, it often presents a conflict that is both personal and societal. This conflict challenges the status quo and the values that uphold it, while forcing individuals to confront their own beliefs and values. This paper will examine the conflict created by an individual opposing the will of the majority and its moral and ethical implications for both the individual and society. The chosen work for this analysis is the novel “1984” by George Orwell. This novel portrays a dystopian society where the government exercises total control over the citizens, and the protagonist, Winston Smith, opposes this totalitarian regime.
