Why is Kambili punished?

Kambili is punished for not conforming to her father’s strict religious and cultural expectations. For example, when Kambili fails to pray for her brother Jaja, her father, Eugene, scolds her, saying: “You have disappointed me, Kambili. You allowed the devil to fill your heart with hatred for your own brother, to the point where you would not even pray for him. You allowed the devil to make you commit the sin of pride, to make you feel superior to your father” (Adichie, p. 33).
