George Orwell: Animal Farm-Question paper: Paper 2 Modern texts and poetry – June 2018
Squealer, a character in George Orwell’s “Animal Farm,” acts as the spokesman for the ruling pigs who take over the farm after their human oppressors are overthrown. Squealer’s job is to persuade the other animals that the pigs are acting in their best interests even as they exhibit oppressive and corrupt behaviour that is getting worse. In this essay, I’ll contend that Orwell uses Squealer’s persona to explore concepts of truth and lies and to demonstrate how language can be used to a person’s advantage.
Squealer is portrayed as a skilled wordsmith who can distort the truth to advance the pig rulers’ agenda throughout the entire book. Squealer, for instance, claims that it is essential for the farm to remain operational when the pigs start consuming more than their fair share of its resources. He claims that because the pigs work harder than anyone else, they should be given the extra food and privileges
