Explore how far Dickens presents Magwitch as a dangerous character

Abel Magwitch is initially depicted in Charles Dickens’ book Great Expectations as a threatening and intimidating figure. But as the story goes on, Dickens delves deeper into Magwitch’s character, showing that he is more nuanced than simply a danger.

First Impressions of Magwitch

Magwitch is portrayed as a threatening and intimidating character when he first appears in the book. When Pip comes across him in the cemetery, he is initially alarmed by the stranger’s appearance. Magwitch’s threatening manner is emphasized in the following exchange: “Keep still, you little devil, or I’ll cut your throat!” (Chapter 1).
