Second chances play a major role in Angie Thomas’ book “The Hate U Give” and are a recurring theme. The author demonstrates to us that no matter what the situation, people have the capacity to change for the better and that everyone is deserving of a second chance.

The father of Starr Carter, Maverick Carter, is one of the characters who personifies this theme. Maverick is portrayed as a former gang member who served time in prison for his participation in illegal activities throughout the entire book. He has, however, changed for the better and is now a prosperous business owner, a loving father, and a positive force in his neighbourhood.
