The lives of Alexander and Toby eventually converge when they both end up in London. As they navigate the streets of the city, they become entangled in a web of corruption, greed, and exploitation. They encounter characters such as Mr. Gaddarn, a sinister figure involved in the illegal trade of unwanted children, and Mrs. Lynch, a conniving woman seeking to advance her own position at the expense of others.
The novel also explores the character of Meshak Gadd, who finds himself involved in the lucrative business of selling unwanted infants to the highest bidder. As the plot unfolds, the lives of all the characters intersect, revealing long-held secrets and testing their resilience and humanity.
