As Rosie’s fame grows, Raju finds himself increasingly sidelined and neglected. To make matters worse, the dance school falls into financial trouble. Raju tries various schemes to save the school, including forging Rosie’s signature on a check. His actions lead to his arrest and imprisonment.
While in prison, Raju undergoes a transformation. He embraces spirituality and self-reflection. After his release, he decides to become a holy man, adopting the role of a spiritual guide. He gains a following of devoted disciples and becomes known as “Swami” among the people of Malgudi.
As a spiritual guide, Raju imparts wisdom and guidance to his followers, helping them find meaning in their lives. He becomes revered and gains a reputation as a holy man with miraculous powers. However, Raju’s newfound spiritual journey is tested when a drought hits Malgudi, and the villagers turn to him for help.
In the climax of the novel, Raju decides to perform a ritual to bring rain to the village. He enters a state of deep meditation, unaware of the consequences. The rain finally arrives, but Raju collapses and dies in the process.
“Guide” is a multi-layered novel that explores themes of love, identity, spirituality, and the complexities of human nature. Narayan skillfully weaves together the personal journey of Raju with broader social and cultural issues. The novel raises questions about the nature of truth, the role of spirituality in people’s lives, and the search for meaning and fulfillment.
