Meanwhile, Little Guy is fascinated by the balloon and the idea of flying. He asks his father about it, unaware of the grim realities of their lives. Guy, caught between his own desires and the weight of his responsibilities, struggles to answer his son’s innocent questions honestly.
As the story progresses, Guy becomes increasingly desperate and fixated on the idea of flying away. He decides to take matters into his own hands and breaks into the mill to see the hot air balloon up close. He climbs into the balloon’s basket and imagines himself soaring through the sky, leaving behind the struggles and poverty of his life.
The story reaches its climax when Lili and Little Guy discover Guy in the balloon. Lili pleads with Guy to come down and think about the consequences of his actions, but he refuses. In a tragic turn of events, the balloon accidentally lifts off with Guy inside and he falls to his death.
