The opening scene of “The Happy Prince” features a stunning statue of a prince dressed in gold and jewels and perched atop a tall city column. The statue once represented a real prince who led a life of luxury and protection from the harsh realities of the outside world. To commemorate his happiness, the locals built a statue in his honour after he passed away.

A small swallow making its way south for the winter stops to rest one night on the statue of the prince. The swallow is travelling to Egypt in order to take advantage of the sun’s warmth. The swallow is about to fly away when he notices the prince statue’s dejected expression.

The Happy Prince, from his lofty position, observes the suffering and misery of the people in the city below. He sees the harsh conditions they endure and is deeply moved by their plight. Unable to help them in his present state, he asks the swallow to be his messenger of goodwill.

The Happy Prince instructs the swallow to take the valuable jewels and gold leaf adorning his statue and distribute them among the poor and needy in the city. At first, the swallow is hesitant as he fears the winter cold, but he ultimately decides to stay and carry out the prince’s wishes.

The Happy Prince and the dedicated swallow start their charitable endeavours together. The prince’s jewels and gold leaf are removed by the swallow, who then gives them to the needy, ill, and suffering. The Happy Prince sees his city’s true state and the satisfaction of helping others through the eyes of the swallow.

The bitter cold, however, causes the swallow’s health to deteriorate as winter goes on. The Happy Prince advises the swallow to fly to a warmer location after observing its condition. The swallow, however, will not depart from the prince because he feels compelled to complete his act of kindness.

Tragically, the swallow’s prolonged exposure to the cold results in his passing away at the Happy Prince’s feet. The city officials label the prince “shabby” and remove him from the column after stripping him of his gold and jewels.

The Mayor commands that the dead swallow and the broken heart of the Happy Prince be dumped on the city’s trash heap. A leaden heart and the dead swallow are revealed as the statue is torn apart. Despite being abandoned, the broken statue and the dead swallow are taken to heaven by an angel.

The angel declares that the Happy Prince’s broken heart and the dead swallow who performed good deeds while alive are the most priceless items in the city. They receive floral crowns from the angel and live forever in perfect beauty.
