The novel begins with Frederic Henry working as an ambulance driver for the Italian army during World War I. He is stationed in the Italian Alps, where he witnesses the brutality and senselessness of war. Despite the chaos around him, Frederic remains emotionally detached, focusing on the practicalities of his job.
Frederic is hurt during a retreat and brought to a Milan hospital. He meets Catherine Barkley, a stunning British nurse, there. Even though they had some reservations at first, Frederic and Catherine quickly fell in love. They both benefit greatly from their relationship as an escape from the harrowing realities of war.
As their relationship develops, Frederic is recalled to the battlefield. He is wounded once more, but this time it is worse. Frederic discovers Catherine is expecting while he is getting better in a hospital in Milan. In order to be together and raise their child away from the war, the couple decides to flee to neutral Switzerland.
Frederic and Catherine are able to find some peace and happiness in Switzerland. Catherine gives birth to their son while they live in a small town. Their happy existence, however, is short-lived because Frederic’s memories of the war still linger. He learns that the Italian military police are looking for him for deserting. Frederic decides to leave Switzerland and rejoin the battle out of fear of being discovered.
Frederic travels to Milan and meets up with Catherine there. The couple intends to run away and seek refuge in the mountains. Catherine, however, becomes ill as they travel through the hazardous and rainy terrain. She experiences an early labour and delivers a stillborn child. Catherine suffers a postpartum haemorrhage and passes away, devastated by the loss of their child.
In the novel’s poignant conclusion, Frederic is left utterly heartbroken by Catherine’s death. He is forced to confront the reality of the war and the devastating impact it has had on his life. The novel ends with Frederic’s realization that love, like life itself, is fleeting and often ends tragically.
