“Half a Rupee Worth” is a short story written by R.K. Narayan. The story revolves around the main character, Sankar, a young boy who is given half a rupee by his grandmother to buy a ticket for a drama at the local fair. Sankar is excited about the opportunity to watch the drama and plans to buy a ticket with the money.
Various temptations tempt Sankar as he travels to the fair. He is tempted to stop at a sweets stand as he passes it with his money in hand, but he resists and keeps going towards the fair. A monkey that is chained to a post also catches his attention, and he considers buying it, but he declines.
Finally using his half rupee at the fair, Sankar purchases a ticket for the drama. However, just as he is about to enter the theatre, he encounters a beggar who requests some cash. Sankar, moved by the man’s plight, decides to give him his ticket instead of watching the play himself.
Sankar returns home to his grandmother, who is disappointed that he didn’t watch the drama. Sankar explains what happened and his grandmother praises his selfless act. She tells him that his sacrifice is worth more than half a rupee and that he has gained something invaluable.
The story explores themes of temptation, sacrifice, and the value of selflessness. It portrays Sankar as a young boy with a kind heart who chooses to help someone in need instead of pursuing his own desires.
