Death on the Nile is a classic murder mystery featuring Agatha Christieโs famous Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. The story takes place in Egypt, mainly on a luxurious river cruise along the Nile River.
The Setup
Poirot is enjoying a vacation in Egypt when he meets a young, beautiful, and extremely wealthy woman named Linnet Ridgeway. Linnet has recently married Simon Doyle, who was previously engaged to her best friend, Jacqueline de Bellefort. This sudden betrayal deeply hurts Jacqueline, who starts following the newlyweds on their honeymoon, clearly bitter and obsessive.
To escape Jacquelineโs stalking, Linnet and Simon go on a cruise down the Nile. Coincidentally (or maybe not), Poirot is on the same boatโthe Karnakโalong with a group of other colorful passengers, including:
- Mrs. Otterbourne, a romance novelist
- Rosalie Otterbourne, her serious daughter
- Colonel Race, a British official
- Salome Otterbourne, a dramatic woman with a secret past
- Pennington, Linnet’s American trustee
- Dr. Bessner, a German doctor
- Louise Bourget, Linnetโs maid
- Ferguson, a political radical
The tension between Jacqueline, Linnet, and Simon continues to build, with Jacqueline displaying erratic and emotional behavior.
The Murder
One night, Jacqueline gets drunk and shoots Simon in the leg in a jealous rage. Heโs taken to his cabin for treatment. The next morning, Linnet is found dead in her cabinโshot in the head. At this point, nearly everyone on the boat becomes a suspect.
Poirot begins to investigate, slowly untangling the complex web of lies, motives, and secrets.
Clues and Twists
Several suspicious things start happening after Linnetโs death:
- Linnetโs maid, Louise, says she knows something about the murderโbut is found stabbed to death before she can tell Poirot.
- Mrs. Otterbourne also says she saw the killerโbut is shot in front of everyone before she can speak.
These murders seem calculated to cover up Linnetโs killer, and Poirot knows that time is running out before the killer disappears or strikes again.
The Truth Revealed
In a dramatic reveal, Poirot explains that Simon and Jacqueline had never broken up. The whole engagement and marriage to Linnet was part of a scheme to get Linnetโs fortune.
Hereโs what happened:
- Jacqueline pretended to be angry and shot Simonโbut she only grazed him.
- While everyone was distracted helping Simon, he snuck away, went to Linnetโs cabin, and shot her.
- He then returned to his cabin and re-injured his leg to make it look convincing.
- Jacqueline later killed Louise and Mrs. Otterbourne to silence them.
They planned the entire thing together to inherit Linnetโs wealth, thinking they could fool everyone.
The Ending
Poirot confronts Simon and Jacqueline with the truth. They confess, but Jacqueline knows they cannot escape. Rather than face trial and punishment, she kills Simon and then herself, using a gun she had hidden.
The story ends with Poirot reflecting on love, jealousy, and justice. Despite the tragic events, he remains calm and compassionate, showing understanding even toward the broken souls behind the crime.
