In Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” the three ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future are instrumental in assisting Ebenezer Scrooge in his transformation from a miserly, selfish man to a kind, generous one. Scrooge is helped by the ghosts to alter his attitudes and behaviour through their interactions with him, which ultimately results in his redemption.
Scrooge is first taken on a journey through his early years by the Ghost of Christmas Past, who serves as a reminder of the happiness and innocence he once experienced. The ghost reveals to Scrooge his younger self, demonstrating that he was not always the heartless, cold person he has evolved into. The ghost says, “Your lip is trembling… And what is that upon your cheek?… A solitary tear, a child’s tear?” The ghost helps Scrooge understand that he has lost his way and needs to reunite with his younger, more naive self by bringing back memories of his past.
