In Charles Dickens’ novel “Great Expectations,” Pip and Joe’s relationship is one of the central themes. Through their interactions, Dickens presents a complex relationship that changes over the course of the story.
Pip and Joe are close friends at the start of the story. Pip’s best friend, confidant, and protector is Joe. Pip describes Joe as “a dear fellow” and “the best of friends.” He looks up to Joe and admires his honesty, kindness, and simplicity. Pip says, “I loved Joe–perhaps for no better reason in those early days than because the dear fellow let me love him.” Joe, in turn, is devoted to Pip and takes care of him in every way he can.
