Explore how Dickens presents ideas about joy and happiness in ‘A Christmas Carol’.

The main character, Ebenezer Scrooge, undergoes a transformation in Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” which explores themes of joy and happiness. Dickens emphasises the value of relationships and the ability of generosity to improve people’s lives throughout the novella.

The Absence of Joy and Happiness in Scrooge’s Life

Scrooge is presented in the novella’s opening pages as a chilly, miserly, and lonesome character who has no joy or happiness in his life. He squanders his money, shuns charitable giving, and shows disdain for his workers.

Dickens illustrates this through the following quote:

“External heat and cold had little influence on Scrooge. No warmth could warm, no wintry weather chill him. No wind that blew was bitterer than he, no falling snow was more intent upon its purpose, no pelting rain less open to entreaty.”
